Mission
The mission of the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology is to:
- Generate new knowledge through relevant research
- Provide excellent teaching and training through stimulation of critical and independent thinking
- Create a stimulating and pleasant environment in which students and personnel can thrive
This is achieved through our core values of respect, care and consideration for our colleagues, patients and students, and the belief that there is no substitute for excellence.
Oral Health and Diseases forms the core of the School of Clinical Dentistry. A thorough understanding of Oral Diseases and Conditions is an essential pre-requisite. Understanding a disease process right through pathogenesis and clinical behavior prepares the clinician to intercept and treat. And we endeavour to impart this knowledge to our students so that they can be good clinicians in the future.
The Department of Oral Pathology is an academic department with responsibilities for undergraduate teaching in the first three years of the BDS course.
We also run a postgraduate teaching program training dental surgeons to be Oral Pathologists and provide a specialist, diagnostic head and neck histopathology reporting service, admitting two students per year.
