“Prevention is better than cure” is the slogan we follow.

Preventive & Community Dentistry is that branch of dentistry which deals with prevention & control of dental disease and promoting dental health through organized community efforts. It is that form of dental practice which  serves  the community as a patient rather than an  individual. It is concerned with dental health education of the public with applied research, and administration of group dental care programmes for the prevention and control of dental diseases.

Guide lines followed in Dental Public Health Practice

  1. Public health work is done in areas where group responsibility is recognized.
  2. Public health work relies on team efforts.
  3. Prevention of the diseases is the main goal reason being- Ethical, Team work, Cost efficiency.
  4. Public health worker deals with the healthy as well as the sick.
  5. Health education & communication of the local population.

* Ultimate Aim is to improve the oral health of the public of nation.

Services Provided through Public Health Dentistry

  1. Health education in Community, motivation of the individuals or community for receiving dental services.
  2. Delivering dental treatments to the community through organized dental health camps especially in rural areas.
  3. Providing dental prophylaxis and other oral hygiene measures, including instruction in home care.
  4. Through the school health programmes to deliver dental care for children.
  5. Application of caries preventive measures such as topical applications of fluorides, pit & fissure sealants etc.
  6. Demonstration of new dental preventive methods and procedures to the community.
  7. Providing dental treatments like extractions, oral prophylaxis, fluoride application etc. through the school health programme.
  8. Conducting dental public health activities and field experiences for dental students.

    1. Aim is to deliver knowledge about various dental diseases & their further consequences/ complications.
    2. To advise patients about preventive modalities and service modalities available to control disease
    3. Instruction on self care / home care oral hygiene preventive measures
  2. Dental health Museum:-
    Through health education charts and models we try to improve the knowledge of general public & make them aware of dental health.
  3. We conduct various Community dental health education & treatment camps:- check-up & as well as treatment camps especially in the peripheral and rural remote areas which are  deprived of dental service facilities through mobile dental van service facility we are trying to take dental services even to the door steps of public in service centre deprived areas
  4. School dental health programmes are being conducted :- as a dental check-up & treatment advise programmes,  deliver lectures to school children and there by try to create an awareness about dental health in them
  5. Dental health programmes being conducted in association with the voluntary social organizations for the well fare & the benefit of the general public
  6. We are trying to cover some most needy population groups of the society such as orphans, handicapped, prisoners, old ages, laborers etc. through conducting some dental health programmes & distributing free medicines at times.
  7. Four satellite centers are being functioning under the supervision of department at four different places in the city
              a. Kamala Nehru
              b. Bhawani Peth
              c. Sahakar Nagar
              d. Sonawane
    These centers are regularly providing dental care to the needy individuals. These are also providing good work experience to the intern doctors.
  8. Comprehensive dental care is being provided to the school children of the Azam Campus at department clinic.
  9. We are conducting some dental public health activities and field experiences for the dental students. Training the students to conduct health surveys & to prepare scientific reports of research for the presentations and publications.
  10. We organize some field visits such as  water purification plants, industries, milk dairy, confectionary  factories, Primary Health Care Centers for the benefit of student.
  11. N.S.S activities jointly with the department are being organized in the college, as well as in the city and peripheral places in the form of health camps, school programmes, various other health improvement activities like Blood donation camp, Oral Cancer awareness and detection camp, etc.
  12. No Tobacco rally on (31st May- National No Tobacco day) was conducted. Health’s camps particularly during some general festival like Ganesh Chaturthi  etc. are being organized, Timely health camps on the day of celebration of Birth days of important executives of the managements are also being held.
 
  • This department deals with spreading awareness in the society about oral health care.
  • We arrange dental awareness camps in various schools, hospitals, during religious functions etc.
  • Every year, 50 students become members of the National Service Scheme (NSS).
